What we like, and what to think about.

What does 12 kW of output mean?
Watts tell you how much power the inverter can supply at one time. EG4 lists 12,000 W of normal output at 240 V. That is 50 amps at 240 V.
That is much more output than a portable power station. It can support a system with several household or workshop loads at once. But 12 kW does not mean every home can run every device at the same time.
Electric water heaters, dryers, well pumps, ovens, heat pumps, welders, compressors, and shop tools can add up fast. Some motors also need a short burst of extra power when they start.
EG4's published specifications list 18,000 W of surge power for about five seconds and 15,000 W for about ten seconds. Those short surge ratings can help with startup loads, but the 12,000 W normal rating is the safer number for steady planning.
Solar and battery planning matter as much as the inverter.
EG4 lists two MPPT solar channels. The published DC input range is 100 to 480 V, and the MPPT operating range is 120 to 385 V.
The maximum usable solar power is 24,000 W, split as 12,000 W per MPPT. EG4 also publishes a higher recommended-array ceiling, but the 24 kW usable figure is the more useful number when thinking about how much solar power the inverter can actually use.
Do not read those numbers as permission to connect any group of panels. Solar string voltage changes with temperature. Cold weather can push voltage higher. Current limits also matter. The panel count and wiring layout have to stay inside the inverter's rules.
The battery side matters just as much. A 12 kW inverter can ask a 48 V battery bank for a lot of current. The batteries, busbars, cables, fuses, and breakers all need to be sized for the job. A small battery bank can become the limit even when the inverter itself is large.
Current price: strong inverter output for the item price.
At the latest SGS price check on September 16, 2026, ShopSolar had the EG4 12000XP V2 at $1,899 and available to buy. Signature Solar showed $1,899.99 but listed the unit as preorder or backorder at that time.
Using the current in-stock $1,899 item price, 12,000 W of normal output works out to about 6.32 W for each dollar.
That number is useful for comparing inverter hardware. It does not tell you the price of a finished system. Batteries, panels, wire, breakers, disconnects, transfer gear, rapid-shutdown equipment, labor, and permits can cost much more than the inverter itself.
Think of W per dollar as one shopping tool. It answers one question: how much rated inverter output are you getting for the inverter's item price?
The real buying question is whether the whole system fits.
Start with your loads. Make a list of the circuits and devices you want to run. Note the normal watts and any startup surge. That tells you whether 12 kW is too much, too little, or about right.
Then size the battery bank. The batteries must be able to supply the current the inverter can ask for. Check battery voltage, current limits, BMS communication, cable size, fusing, and busbars.
Next, design the solar strings. Stay inside the inverter's voltage and current limits in the coldest and hottest weather you expect.
Finally, plan the AC side. Think about grid or generator input, transfer behavior, grounding, breakers, disconnects, panel layout, and local electrical rules.
EG4 lists switching times under 10 milliseconds for a single unit and under 20 milliseconds in parallel use. That may help with backup power, but a home electrical system should not be designed from one timing number. Use the current manual and qualified help where required.
Parallel expansion is useful, but it adds work.
EG4 publishes support for multiple 12000XP units in parallel. That can help very large systems grow beyond one inverter.
More inverters also mean more battery current, more wiring, more protection gear, and more setup rules. Parallel capability is a useful option, not a reason to oversize a system you do not need.
